Background of the Study
The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized various sectors, including education, by providing innovative solutions to enhance the efficiency and functionality of smart campuses. IoT enables the interconnection of devices and systems, allowing for real-time monitoring and automation of various campus facilities, such as lighting, temperature control, security, and student management systems. The adoption of IoT technologies in universities has made campuses more responsive, energy-efficient, and student-centered. However, as IoT devices become increasingly integrated into campus infrastructures, the security of these devices and networks has emerged as a critical concern. IoT security is vital to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, and cyber-attacks, which could compromise the privacy of students, faculty, and staff.

Nigerian Army University, Biu, located in Biu LGA, Borno State, is in the process of adopting IoT technologies to improve its campus operations. Despite the advantages, the implementation of IoT solutions in university campuses exposes the institution to various security risks due to the interconnected nature of devices. The complexity of securing IoT networks, coupled with the rapid pace of technological change, presents challenges in maintaining a secure IoT environment. As the university seeks to create a smart campus, it is crucial to evaluate the current state of IoT security and identify vulnerabilities that could potentially disrupt university operations or compromise sensitive data.

Statement of the Problem
While the use of IoT devices on university campuses offers significant benefits, including increased operational efficiency and enhanced learning environments, the security of these devices remains a critical challenge. Nigerian Army University, Biu, has embraced IoT technology for campus automation, but there is limited assessment of the security measures in place to protect the devices and data. The potential vulnerabilities in the IoT infrastructure could expose the university to cyber-attacks, data breaches, and unauthorized access, jeopardizing both personal and institutional information. This study aims to address the gap in knowledge regarding IoT security at Nigerian Army University, Biu, and to evaluate the security frameworks currently in place.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the current IoT security measures implemented at Nigerian Army University, Biu.

2. To identify potential security risks and vulnerabilities within the IoT systems used at Nigerian Army University.

3. To recommend strategies for improving IoT security and mitigating potential risks at Nigerian Army University.

Research Questions

1. What are the current IoT security measures implemented at Nigerian Army University, Biu?

2. What are the potential security vulnerabilities and risks associated with IoT systems at Nigerian Army University?

3. How can IoT security be enhanced to mitigate identified risks at Nigerian Army University?

Research Hypotheses

1. There are significant gaps in the IoT security measures currently implemented at Nigerian Army University, Biu.

2. The IoT systems at Nigerian Army University are vulnerable to potential security risks and cyber-attacks.

3. Implementing stronger security measures will significantly reduce the risks associated with IoT devices on campus.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the state of IoT security at Nigerian Army University, Biu, and will contribute to the development of more secure IoT infrastructures on university campuses. By identifying vulnerabilities and proposing security enhancements, the research will help protect the privacy and integrity of the university’s data systems and infrastructure. Additionally, the findings can inform other educational institutions in Nigeria and beyond about the best practices for securing IoT networks in smart campuses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on evaluating the IoT security systems at Nigerian Army University, Biu, located in Biu LGA, Borno State. The research will analyze existing security measures, identify vulnerabilities, and assess the effectiveness of current protocols. The scope will be limited to IoT devices and networks on the university’s campus, excluding other IT systems such as traditional computer networks and external cloud-based services. The study is limited to the current security measures and may not account for future developments in IoT technologies.
